Two things I’ve always wanted: 1) land that was passed down through generations so that I could live on my own little piece of family history and 2) a micro-farm so that I could learn how to “live off the land” and all that good stuff. Well, I might get both… only it's not my family and it’s not a farm. After our four year separation (ok, technically “divorce”) with two of those years involving a geographical difference of living in very different states, my husband and I have reconciled. (More on that later.) Our reuniting, of course, is calling for a move. I will soon be packing up my Oklahoma house and heading back to Northern California, to begin my “new” marriage with my “old” hubby. In our maddening search for a home we both liked, JR (that’s what I’m going to call him now) Facetimed homes to me… many, many homes. This one was over-priced, that one was too much of a fixer-upper, “I’m just not feeling it” … and so it went…. …Until one beautiful, marvelous day, when realtor.com and the Hallelujah Chorus met in glorious harmony. I scrolled the listing: This almost 2000 square foot home sat on one acre in a deliciously small Podunk town just a few miles from our original bustling stomping grounds. Surrounded by almond orchards and various types of farm-folk neighbors, this roost had been built over 70 years ago- and had stayed in the same family. As I channeled my inner Chip and Joanna, I saw potential in that soon-to-be FARMHOUSE! I imagined hours of sexy design work and steamy renovation with JR. I daydreamed of work boots and Wranglers; corral fencing and big sky; sunflowers and fresh vegetables. Oh, this was no ordinary house. This was our forever homestead!
